Murphy attacked on net neutrality, voted Friday to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”

Rep. Scott Murphy got attacked from the left last week, for a letter sent to the FCC that net neutrality proponents claim was parroting big Telecom. Murphy and 73 other Democrats allegedly, “sold you out to AT&T, Verizon and Comcast,” targeted e-mail messages sent to constituents in the districts of Murphy and the other members of Congress who signed a letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski on May 24 asserted. A letter from Working Assets, the progressive long-distance service, and their “CREDO Action” group says, “They signed industry-backed letters telling the FCC to abandon efforts to protect Internet users by prohibiting big companies from blocking Internet traffic.” Another e-mail from Timothy Karr at Free Press Action Fund said, “Almost every one of these representatives has accepted massive contributions from the phone and cable lobby. Now the industry is demanding a return on its investment.” Murphy’s staff lined up to defend their boss last week, with chief of staff Todd Schulte sending out an e-mail to supporters saying, “Congressman Murphy is in favor of an open Internet to benefit consumers and technological innovation. The email claims the letter states Scott is opposed to net neutrality – the letter says no such thing.” Yes, the letter Murphy signed is vague, but can easily be read as threatening to net neutrality proponents. Schulte also says Murphy favors, “dramatically expand[ing] broadband access, and that we need an internet regime that protects and benefits consumers first and foremost. Scott has concerns about using a decades old provision to regulate a medium totally unimagined when the telephone network first expanded across the nation.” Search Murphy’s website for the phrase “net neutrality” and “No documents match your query.” But search the OpenSecrets website, and Karr seems wrong about at least Murphy’s campaign coffers. Here is the top twenty list of Murphy’s largest contributors, sorted by industry:

Attacks on Murphy from the right may begin again, as on Friday, he voted to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, which passed the House, 234-194.

WGXC checked in with the staff of Murphy’s Republican opponent this fall, and Chris Gibson opposes net neutrality and the repeal of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Gibson says stimulus didn’t; would abolish Homeland Security

The Republican Congressional candidate Chris Gibson would abolish the Department of Homeland Security, and says the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was “a loser for our country, but especially for our area,” in an interview with Jimmy Vielkind in the Albany Times-Union. He writes: “[Gibson] said that the regional management of the conflict is good — he even said that President Barack Obama has made “good choices” in managing the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan — but the separation between military efforts and civil defense, or homeland security measures, must be improved.” The Kinderhook conservative is challenging incumbent Democrat Scott Murphy for New York’s 20th Congressional District seat. Murphy hires a campaign manager, Gibson meets volunteers

From Jimmy Vielkind in Capitol Confidential:

Rep. Scott Murphy’s re-election campaign buried a tidbit in two e-mails they sent soliciting campaign cash before a deadline: Murphy has brought on Mitch Wallace as his campaign manager. A Wisconsin native, Wallace has been involved in several campaigns there and in other states. Also this weekend, Murphy’s Republican opponent Chris Gibson met with over 200 volunteers at West Mountain. A narrative account written… by Gibson’s press aide Rob Clark is reproduced in the link below. Read the entire story at Capitol Confidential.

Murphy employed pollster who settled with Attorney General

    Congressman Scott Murphy
From Jimmy Vielkind in Capitol Confidential:

Rep. Scott Murphy paid $23,100 in the last three months to Global Strategy Group, a Democratic polling firm which recently paid a $2 million settlement in connection with a pay-to-play investigation. Murphy’s quarterly filing shows the payments to Global were made on Feb. 4 and 24 for polling. They were Murphy’s largest expenditures (others include payments to Act Blue, for Murphy’s fund-raisers and some travel) of the quarter, during which he raised $475,000. Global Strategy Group acknowledged to Cuomo’s investigators that they acted as an unlicensed placement agent when they arranged a meeting with Intermedia Partners and Comptroller Tom DiNapoli in 2007. Intermedia’s investment from the state’s common retirement fund was increased thereafter. The firm has many marquis Democratic clients: it advised former Gov. Eliot Spitzer in his 2006 election and is currently on retainer to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Murphy has used Global as his pollster since his 2009 special election. Gillibrand’s Republican opponent David Malpass has called on her to break with Global, and other Republicans (including Doug Hoffman, the likely Conservative Party candidate against Rep. Bill Owens) are issuing similar calls…. “We have spoken with Global Strategy Group are satisfied that they have worked with the Attorney General’s office to resolve the issue,” said Josh Schwerin, a Murphy spokesman. “Furthermore, it is evident that this incident is unrelated to our relationship with the firm and our campaign will continue to employ their services.”

    Murphy posts appropriation requests online

U.S. Representative Scott Murphy (D, NY20), who represents Greene and Columbia counties, has posted his appropriations requests online. The projects from Greene and Columbia, and nearby, include:

Preservation of Manufacturing Jobs through Renewable Energy and Creation of a Center for Sustainable Manufacturing, Hudson, New York
    Amount: $1,000,000
On behalf of the Columbia Economic Development Corporation, I requested that the FY 2011 Energy and Water Appropriations bill contain $1,000,000 to establish an investment fund for environmental sustainability projects focused on alternative energy. This project would also provide technical assistance to manufacturers increasing their facility energy efficiencies. This is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because this investment will increase the use of alternative energy sources among manufacturing companies and small businesses, spurring job growth and technology innovation.
    Recipient: Columbia Economic Development Corporation
    4303 Route 9
    Hudson, NY 12534

New York State Solar Electric Incentive Programs, Copake, New York
    Amount: $35,100
On behalf of the Town of Copake, I requested that the FY 2011 Energy and Water Appropriations bill contain $35,100 to procure and install solar panels on the roof of the Copake Town Hall, adding rows of photovoltaic modules equating to a total rated power of 24.0kw (240v). This is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because this investment grows the solar industry, an important sustainable energy source, and stimulates our economy by creating jobs in solar manufacturing and installation.
    Recipient: Town of Copake
    230 Mountain View Road
    Copake, NY 12516

Generator for Emergency Shelter, Livingston, New York
    Amount: $19,000
On behalf of the Town of Livingston, Columbia County, I requested that the FY 2011 Homeland Security Appropriations bill contain $19,000 to procure equipment needed to provide electricity and heat to the Livingston Town Emergency Shelter during emergency conditions. This is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because this investment assures public safety and shelter to citizens during times of emergency.
    Recipient: Town of Livingston
    119 County Route 19
    Livingston, NY 12541

The Village of Red Hook Water Project, Red Hook, New York
    Amount: $1,000,000
On behalf of the Town of Red Hook, I requested that the FY 2011 Interior & Environment appropriations bill contain $1,000,000 for the installation of an alternative well field and controls. This is the first step in a plan to rehabilitate the Village’s water infrastructure and provide the Village of Red Hook with a reliable source of drinking water. This is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because it will ensure that the people of Red Hook have access to reliable and safe drinking water.
Recipient: The Village of Red Hook
    7467 South Broadway
    Red Hook, NY 128571

Remediation of Vanderburgh Cove Wastewater Project, Rhinebeck, New York

On behalf of the Town of Rhinebeck, I requested that the FY 2011 Interior & Environment appropriations bill contain $233,750 for the engineering and replacement of two Bioclere units at the existing water treatment facility. The project will ensure that residents can continue to enjoy affordable, environmentally safe wastewater collection and treatment services. Failure of the system threatens the Hudson River Estuary, as well as several local drinking water systems. This is a valuable use of tax payer funds because the project will ensure continued wastewater treatment services and will ensure the safety of the area’s drinking water.
    Recipient: Town of Rhinebeck
    80 E. Market St.
    Rhinebeck, NY 12572

Camphill Ghent Elder Care Initiative, Copake, New York
    Amount: $250,000
On behalf of Camphill Village, I requested that the FY 2011 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations bill contain $250,000 for initial construction of building an elder care community in Ghent to provide care for seniors of all levels of income and ability. This is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because community care best addresses the needs of seniors who require specialized care at dramatically less cost to the individual and the healthcare system.
    Recipient: Camphill Village USA
    84 Camphill Road
    Copake, NY 12516

    Ambulance Replacement, Copake, New York

This is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because it will provide critical and prompt emergency medical service to the more than 15,000 people served in the community where those services are currently unavailable.
    Recipient: Clausson-Raught Community Rescue Squad
    283 Mountain View Road

On behalf of Columbia Memorial Hospital, I requested that the FY 2011 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations bill contain $1,000,000 to help develop the hospital’s electronic health record system. This is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because electronic medical records improve patient access to critical health information, reduce medical errors, and drive higher-quality and lower-cost care through the health care system.
    Recipient: Columbia Memorial Hospital
    71 Prospect Street
    Hudson, NY 12534

Northern Dutchess Hospital: Master Facility Plan, Rhinebeck, New York

On behalf of Northern Dutchess Hospital, I requested that the FY 2011 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations bill contain $1,000,000 for construction of a medical and surgical addition as well as renovation of the oldest in-patient area in the hospital. This is an appropriate use of taxpayer funds because it will ensure continued safe access to health care for the surrounding rural communities.

    6511 Springbrook Avenue
    Rhinebeck, NY 12572

On behalf of the Cairo Public Library, I requested that the FY 2011 T-HUD Appropriations bill contain $400,000 for the planning, design, and construction of a new library in Cairo, New York. The current library facility serves as a central location for library resources, community programming, tax forms, internet, etc. However, the facility is inadequate to meet the growing demand. This is a valuable use of taxpayer dollars because the library serves as an important resource for this rural community and will increase quality of life in Cairo.
    Recipient: Cairo Library
    512 Main St.
    Cairo, NY 12413

The Claverack Free Library and Reading Room Project, Claverack, New York

On behalf of the Claverack Free Library and Reading Room, I requested the FY 2011 T-HUD bill contain $200,000 to remodel the existing Claverack Firehouse into the Claverack Free Library and Reading Room. Funds would be used for design, engineering, hazardous material remediation, and construction. This is a valuable use of taxpayer funds because the new facility will allow for the expansion of traditional library services, including internet access, to the local community, as well as serve as an anchor public facility within the town’s commercial core.
    Recipient: Claverack Free Library
    629 State Route 23
    Claverack, NY 12513

Columbia Economic Development Corporation Broadband Consortium Project, Hudson, New York

The renovated building would be used as a tourism center and house offices for the Chamber of Commerce and local economic development organizations. Scott Murphy (D-NY20), who represents Greene and Columbia counties, says the congressman supported the measure. Now Senate bill 592 must pass that half of Congress before the bill goes to President Obama for a signature or veto.

Murphy speaks locally about health care
Listen to U.S. Representative Murphy’s entire town hall meeting:
    Part One of Town Meeting
    Part Two of Town Meeting
Murphy interview with Albany Times-Union reporter and WGXC reporter after the meeting
Several hundred local residents and others from outside the area turned up this morning at 11 a.m. at The Golden Harvest Farm in Valatie to hear U.S. Representative Scott Murphy (D-20) talk about and answer questions about the health care before Congress. While similar meetings in other Congressional districts have turned into shouting matches and even brawls, this debate was mostly civil, with just a bit of shouting, and mostly respectful questions from all sides of the political spectrum from the crowd of around 400.

There seemed to be as many people who did not want the government providing any health care at all as there were folks who favored a single-payer system, judging by Murphy’s poll of the crowd at the end. Of course, by then, after over an hour in the hot sun, the group was much smaller then at the beginning, and perhaps only folks with very passionate political positions remained. Listen to the links above to hear the entire meeting (in two parts), and an interview Murphy gave afterwards with a reporter from the Albany Times-Union and WGXC.

Judge rules against Overbaugh ballot bid
    From Seeing Greene

Linda L. Overbaugh’s name will not appear on the Republican primary ballot next month for one of the four Catskill seats on the Greene County Legislature, a judge ruled Thursday. Dick May from the Seeing Greene blog scooped everyone, reporting Thursday that Supreme Court Judge Richard M. Platkin ordered the Executive Director of the Heart of Catskill Association off the ballot, after her name was listed incorrectly on petitions. She was listed as Linda H. Overbaugh, her former cousin-in-law, who also lives in Catskill. For the lawsuit, Patricia J. Ruck, who chairs the Town of Catskill’s Democratic Party Committee, adopted the Citizen Objector role, while Forest Cotten, past Catskill Democratic chairman and present candidate for re-election to the county legislature, was designated as Aggrieved Candidate. Overbaugh was expected to win a slot in the legislature, perhaps costing incumbent Cotten his seat. Overbaugh told Seeing Greene “it’s not over,” perhaps hinting she will start a write-in campaign for the September primary, where voters would have to write in “Linda L. Overbaugh” exactly. Where was The Daily Mail on this story? They were bested by The Greenville Press for a week before the ruling, and then only mentioned this story for the first time today, two days after May’s story.

Town & County magazine writes about Hudson
The September 2009 issue of Town & Country magazine (with actress Jane Krakowski on the cover) features a large story about Hudson’s antique stores called “A Hudson River Renaissance.” Hopefully, the story will help merchants there struggling during this recession — one antique store owner told me in Febraury he did not make a single sale.
